The paper will show that the single largest avoidable cost associated with typical data center infrastructure is oversizing. The utilization of the physical and power infrastructure in a data center is typically much less than 50 percent. _______________________________________________________ 1. Upgrade Makes IEEE Xplore Easier to Explore IEEE Xplore, the document delivery system for all of IEEE's journals, magazines, and conference proceedings, is now bigger and better than ever, thanks to its latest release. Read more about the improvements at 2. Former NEC Chair Receives Medal of Honor Tadahiro Sekimoto, former chair of NEC Corp., Tokyo, is the recipient of the 2004 IEEE Medal of Honor. An IEEE Life Fellow, Sekimoto is recognized for his remarkable career in the field of digital satellite communications, his promotion of information technology R&D, and his technical and corporate leadership in computers and communications. Find out more about Sekimoto and the other recipients of this year's awards at 3. African Web Site Focuses on Standards If developing standards requires nothing else, it demands excellent communications within business communities. This is no easy task with Africa's diversity and often poor communications and transportation systems, but it's being attempted by the IEEE with its new StandardsAfrica Web site. Learn more about the site at 4. Marketplace: The Mother of Invention This past holiday season, dog lovers could finally discover what their dogs were saying with a US$100 gadget called Bowlingual, a device that translates a dog's barks into words. Although inventions such as this may seem unnecessary and frivolous, they're often based on serious science. For example, Bowlingual uses voiceprint technology to create digital representations of sounds. What inventions, whether serious or silly, would you like to see in the next 10 years? Weigh in at 5.
